Quick answerBy Census ACS 2024 estimates, St. Lucie County’s median gross rent is $1,725 a month (Florida: $1,812) and the median home value is $391,900 (Florida: $396,900). MIT’s living wage for one adult with no children is $23.88 an hour. Florida has no state personal income tax.

Housing: the biggest line item

The Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS) is the most consistent public source for comparing places. For 2024 (1-year estimates):

Fort Pierce isn’t in the 1-year release; its 2020–2024 5-year estimates are a median gross rent of $1,217, a median home value of $250,800, and a median household income of $47,072 (Census Reporter: Fort Pierce).

Census home values are owners’ estimates, not sale prices. For what homes are actually selling for, see the monthly market update.

Property taxes

The ACS puts the median real estate taxes paid by St. Lucie County homeowners at $3,928 a year in 2024, compared with $2,993 statewide (ACS 2024, table B25103). Your bill depends on the home’s taxable value, the millage rates where it sits, any non-ad valorem assessments (such as a community development district), and whether you qualify for the homestead exemption. After a sale, a home is reassessed at market value for the new owner (Florida Dept. of Revenue), so the seller’s tax bill can understate what you’ll pay.

A living-wage benchmark

MIT’s Living Wage Calculator estimates what a household needs to earn to cover basic needs (housing, food, child care, health care, transportation and taxes) working full time. For St. Lucie County (updated February 15, 2026):

  • 1 adult, no children: $23.88 an hour, or $49,681 a year before taxes.
  • 1 adult, 1 child: $39.29 an hour.
  • 2 working adults, 2 children: $26.58 an hour each, or $110,574 a year combined before taxes.

How St. Lucie compares on Florida’s price index

The Florida Price Level Index, which the state uses to adjust school funding for local labor costs, put St. Lucie County at 97.86 for 2024, where the population-weighted state average is 100. Martin County was 99.04 and Indian River County 98.79. It’s a wage-based index, not a full consumer price index, so treat it as a rough comparison.

Taxes Florida doesn’t charge

Florida’s Constitution bars a state tax on the income of residents, so there is no state personal income tax (Fla. Const. Art. VII, §5). Budget instead for property taxes, insurance, and, in some communities, HOA or CDD fees (here’s the difference).

Don’t forget insurance

Homeowners and flood insurance can swing a monthly budget more than almost anything else on this list. Get quotes on a specific address early (see roof age & insurance and flood zones).
